This week we have lots of fun winter activities planned. On Monday preschoolers participated in an interactive maze during large group; they had to find their way through the maze to drop off a candy cane at the end all while hopping over grinch images that were on the ground. For our art project we were busy with glitter, glue and paint...creating a secret present that will go home on Wednesday. We are learning more about our senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing) while putting together a Christmas sensory book. Our sensory bin is filled with snow (packing peanuts) and all kinds of holiday items: candy canes, mini presents, and gingerbread/Santa/snowman finger puppets. During large group all week, we will be learning all about our preschoolers family traditions. Each family created a family tradition sheet and these papers and pictures will be hung in the classroom so we all can enjoy learning more about our preschool community.
This week the theme was outer space. The art projects were very open-ended, allowing preschoolers to create what they wanted an astronaut and space alien to look like (see picture below of our class aliens). We were able to try space ice cream for snack on Tuesday and it was yummy!! The sensory table was filled with moon rocks and oorbez. During small group we learned more about our planets while coloring a space booklet. We were not able to go outside at all this week due to the stormy weather so we did large group indoors; we went on a space walk and when we saw aliens we splatted them with our alien smooshers.
It is always Westview School Spirit days on Fridays so I made sure to remind parents to dress their kiddos in Little Wildcats Preschool shirts. What a great group of preschoolers we have this year :) I was able to get individual pictures wearing their shirts (see below). Today during art we made clouds with a a rainbow and sun attached. This art project allowed them to practice a variety of skills: cutting out the cloud (fine motor), coloring the rainbow and talking about colors (cognitive) and tying the string onto the objects (fine motor). Afterwards each child was able to select the place in the room they wanted their art project to hang.
The focus on this week in preschool is on the weather. Today we learned more about the rain while we made our art projects. We painted the clouds (white batting) using watercolors at the sensory table. During literacy time, teacher Sooly read a book about snow and the class helped build a snowman as she read. For large group the lead teachers for the day set up a obstacle course; the tunnel was everyones favorite part! For the next few weeks we will be doing holiday projects in the art area; decorating stockings and making ornaments to decorate our classroom tree.
